What is a sprain?

A sprain is a stretch or tear to a ligament, the tissue that holds two or more bones together. Symptoms of a sprain include pain, swelling, bruising, and restriction of movement in the affected area. There are three levels of sprains: mild or first degree, moderate or second degree, and severe or third degree.

What is a strain?

A strain is an injury to a muscle that results in partial or complete tearing of the muscle, usually caused by sudden movement, overuse, over- stretching, over-contraction or repeated minor trauma. Symptoms of a strain include pain, muscle spasm, and loss of strength in the muscle. There are also three degrees of strains.

What causes them?

Sprains and strains are common injuries in many sports, particularly those that involve running, jumping or rapid changes of direction. Sprains and strains can also occur due to overuse of your muscles and joints during everyday or repetitive activities.

What is the treatment?

At PhysioPlus Health Group we provide effective treatment for sprains and strains and. Initially, treatment for both strains and sprains is very similar. Ice for the first 24-48 hours to decrease swelling, along with compression and elevating the area. Through physiotherapy, osteopathy and massage therapy we can help reduce your pain and swelling and promote recovery to allow a safe return to sport, exercise, work and everyday activities.
