Back-To-School Backpacks
Don’t let them be a pain in the back!

As summer has come to an end, back to school is upon us. Shopping lists for back to school can get lengthy, but a backpack is a key item that every student requires. While shopping for a backpack, students may be more concerned about fashion rather than function.
However, it is important to consider the functional aspects of backpack wear. Improper wear of a backpack worn over time can lead to fatigue and strain of the muscles and soft tissues in the neck and back of a student. Overtime this can lead to pain, discomfort and eventually may limit function.
Important Backpack Features
- Double straps: Wearing straps over both shoulders allows the load of the backpack to be spread evenly over the student’s back. This also prevents them from over compensating for a load on one side of the body.
- Wide, padded straps: Helps to reduce pressure and additionally helping to evenly distribute the weight over both shoulders and back.
- A Padded back: Preventing the contents of the backpack from sticking out into your child’s back.
- Waist belt or hip straps: Assists in transferring some of the load from the shoulder region to the pelvis.
- Reflective material: Increasing visibility at night to increase safety.
How to properly wear a backpack
Once you have selected a backpack, it is wise to monitor how students wear the backpack throughout the year.
- Carrying the proper weight: It is recommended that backpacks should not be loaded more than 15% of a student’s weight. For example a 50 pound child should avoid carrying more than 7½ pounds on their back.
- Position of backpack: The backpack should be in the middle of a student’s back not too far over to one side, with the bottom of the pack not extending beyond the lower back. These aspects allow the b back and abdominal muscles in the body to take the load.
- Education of students: It is suggested that students are educated if they experience any discomfort from their backpack (including pain or redness in the shoulders or back and any numbness and tingling into the arms) they bring this to the attention of their parents. Parents should also be observant for these signs.
New Trend: Backpack on wheels
Backpacks on wheels have recently become a popular choice for students. These are a great choice to decrease the load being carried on the back and shoulder, especially if the weight of the backpack is more than recommended. However, these must also be used correctly to decrease any risk of injury.
- Handle height:Students should avoid having the handle of the backpack too high or low. The optimal height is at the level of the waist.
These backpack tips should help students safely shoulder the load of backpacks and prevent any backpack related injuries. We wish all students the best in the coming school year!
