Dr. Duong Nguyen, MD, MSc(c), FRCSC, DipABOS, FAAOS, CIME, DipSportMed (ABOS /CASEM)
Orthopaedic Surgeon (Sports Medicine), Sports Medicine Physician
Dr. Duong Nguyen completed his orthopedic surgical training at one of the most respected programs in Canada, at the University of Western Ontario. He then pursued further subspecialty training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine with a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the prestigious Columbia University / New York Orthopaedic Hospital. After practicing a few years in North Carolina, Dr. Nguyen has recently relocated to Toronto where he continues in his field of sub-specialization: Sports Medicine / Arthroscopic Shoulder, Elbow & Knee Surgery.
Dr. Nguyen has a busy sports medicine practice but also sees active individuals with osteoarthritis, as well as tendon, ligament and cartilage injuries. He enjoys working collaboratively with other health practitioners, treating patients of all ages from recreational and developing athletes to elite athletes, as well as active individuals and those wishing to become more active.
Research is an integral part of Dr. Nguyen's practice. He reviews scientific articles for many academic journals and has presented his research at multiple national and international meetings. Dr. Nguyen has earned numerous research and teaching awards in recognition for his achievements in the advancement of orthopaedic knowledge and computer assisted surgery, as well as for outstanding leadership and dedication to medical education. He is actively involved in the training of new primary care physicians, sports medicine physicians and orthopaedic residents from the University of Toronto and McMaster University. In 2007, Dr. Nguyen was recognized as an Emerging Leader of the American Orthopaedic Association by Dr. Louis U. Bigliani.
He and his wife live in Toronto. They enjoy tennis, golf, as well as traveling.

Sports Medicine Physician, Certified Independent Medical Examiner
Dr. Kanalec completed his medical training at University of Toronto in 1987. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Sports Medicine to earn his Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine with the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine. In addition to his sports medicine training he has 8 years experience an emergency room physician and has treated a wide range of urgent orthopaedic and sports injuries including fractures, concussions, dislocations, sprains and strains, joint and muscle injuries, ligament injuries, tendonitis, and arthritis. He is a Certified Independent Medical Examiner and holds a diploma in Occupational Health & Safety. In his current sports medicine practice he treats a wide variety of injuries and conditions. He sees patients of all ages and activity levels, including elite and recreational athletes, as well as individuals wishing to become more active.
Dr. Julia Burden, BSc, MD, CCFP
Family Medicine, Special Interest in Sports Medicine
Dr. Burden obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University in 2002 and then went on to study medicine at The University of Western Ontario. She completed her residency training in Family Medicine in 2010, also at the University of Western Ontario. Since finishing her medical training, Dr. Burden has practiced in various locations across southwestern and northern Ontario, and has developed a special interest in sports medicine. Through her training and work in the emergency room and sports medicine settings she has gained valuable experience in treating a variety of orthopaedic and sports injuries including fractures, as well as common soft tissue and joint injuries such as tendonitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains, back and neck pain, and arthritis. In her spare time Dr. Burden enjoys running, scuba diving, and traveling.

Michelle has worked in a variety of private sports medicine settings, including the Artists Health Center at Toronto Western Hospital where she gained valuable experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team of physicians and therapists providing treatment to professional dancers, musicians artists, and performers.

Sarah Symmes, MSc. PT

Sarah obtained her Masters of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Alberta in 2008. She also completed her Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology at McMaster University in 2005. Sarah is experienced in Orthopedics, including, sports injuries, postural dysfunctions and post-surgical rehabilitation. Sarah has a keen interest in working with runners and triathletes on injury prevention and management.
Sarah is committed to continuing education and has completed Manual Therapy Level 2 and Level 3 Upper Quadrant, with plans to continue to pursue training in advanced manual and manipulative therapy. Sarah is also certified by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute having completed her Level 1 (Part 1, 2a and 3a). Sarah also has a passion for Yoga. She completed her Ashtanga Teacher training in 2009 and has a unique approach of integrating yoga postures, breathing and meditation principles within therapeutic exercise. She also enjoys working with both new and experienced Yoga practitioners to prevent injury and help take their practice to the next level.
Outside of work, Sarah has a passion for the outdoors and trying new activities. She is an avid mountain bike enthusiast and completed her first 24 mountain bike event this past summer in the Yukon. Sarah also completed her first sprint distance triathlon this summer with plans to one day do a full Olympic distance. Along with these more vigorous activities Sarah equally enjoys a walk by the lake, or a hike in the woods, and chasing after her nieces and nephews. Whatever the goal, Sarah strives to help people participate in happy active lifestyles.

Tricia was drawn to Physiotherapy by her enthusiasm for meeting people and her fascination with the human body. She will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that works towards meeting your specific goals. She prides herself on getting to the biomechanical root of your aches and pains so that treatment addresses not only healing from injury, but also prevention. She has extensive experience working with clients following orthopaedic surgery (knees, hips, elbows and shoulders) but also enjoys treating repetitive strain injuries, neck and back pain.
Since completing her University education, Tricia has pursued post-graduate courses in acupuncture, therapeutic taping, rehabilitative pilates and is a certified level 2 manual therapist.She has also stayed involved with the U of Toronto Physical Therapy department and was recently appointed as an Adjunct Lecturer. She enjoys giving back by supervising PT and rehab assistant students on their clinical placements.
When Tricia isn’t working she enjoys being outdoors. She retired from competing in track and field years ago, but she stays active by playing ball hockey and riding her bike around town. She also loves to travel and returns home to Calgary whenever she can to see her family.
Celeste Petrusevski, BSc. Kin., MSc. PT

Celeste Petrusevski completed her Masters of Rehabilitation Science in Physiotherapy from McMaster University in 2003. She also obtained her Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology in 2000 from McMaster University.
Celeste has over 10 years of experience in orthopaedics, specifically in sports injuries, repetitive strain, arthritis and post-surgical. Celeste has taken many advanced courses in post-partum exercise, vestibular rehabilitation, fascial mobilization, chronic pain management and breathing re-training. This has allowed her to treat a wide variety of patient populations and obtain positive results.
Celeste is a life-long learner and has completed Level 1, 2 and 3 of the Manual Orthopaedic Courses offered through the Orthopaedic Foundation. Celeste is also certified through the Acupuncture Foundation and regularly incorporates acupuncture into her practice.
Celeste has a keen interest in teaching and has instructed Kinesiologists in various exercise prescription courses. She has continued work in academics with McMaster University as a preceptor to Physiotherapy students in the clinic setting.
Outside of work Celeste spends most of her spare time with her husband and 2 young children. She also enjoys yoga and exercise.
Heather Cracower, MSc. PT, BEdPE

Heather initially earned her Bachelor of Education in Physical Education at McGill. Her love of teaching, physical activity, and science then led her to the University of Toronto, where she completed her Master of Science in Physical Therapy. Heather practiced in her field for a year in Toronto before moving to the US, where she spent seven years treating patients, honing her skills and exploring the beauty of the outdoors in the various States she called home.
Heather has always specialized in orthopedics with an interest in the spine and pelvis. Her philosophy of care incorporates a holistic approach that encompasses injury prevention, recovery and rehabilitation, as well as overall wellness. Heather is also a certified yoga teacher, medical acupuncture provider and Thai massage practitioner. When appropriate, she weaves elements of these practices into her care.
Heather is committed to continuing education and over the years has deepened her knowledge base by taking a diverse range of courses that include McKenzie, Mulligan, ART, Diane Lee and the Institute of Physical Art. Heather moved back to Toronto, her hometown, last year, and has been happily rediscovering this great city.

Benjamin Besse-Bergier, Osteopath, is a graduate of the European School of Osteopathy, an internationally recognized school in England. Originally from France, he joined our team in October 2007. Benjamin has a special interest in pre-natal care and pediatrics. When he's not working, Ben loves to play volleyball, tennis, and snowboard. He is big fan of world music and jazz, and is actually also a drummer.

Marian graduated from York University with a Bachelors of Specialized Honors in Kinesiology and Health Sciences in 2005, during which she also became a certified personal trainer specialist to enhance her practical knowledge and client communication experience. Marian became certified as a Registered Massage Therapist in October 2007 at Sutherland Chan Massage Therapy School. In April 2010 she completed her final year of studies for her Doctor of Osteopathic Manual Practice at the Canadian College of Osteopathy in Toronto. She is currently working on her research which she plans to defend in November 2013. She finds that massage therapy in conjunction with osteopathic manual therapy compliment each other well.

Katrina is an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner and Registered Massage Therapists with over 17 years of extensive experience in manual therapy. Her interest in advanced hands-on treatment began as a result of her own injuries and her successful results through manual therapy. She began her career as a massage therapist, and her passion for learning how to heal through manual therapy led her to complete a two-year Osteopathic Science Program followed by a five-year graduate program in Manual Osteopathic Medicine. Katrina has also received her certification in Acupuncture and combines this in her treatment approach. She has taken numerous professional development courses through the years that have enhanced her knowledge in manual therapy.
Katrina conducted a 2-year research study that examined the effects of osteopathic manual treatment on breast cancer patients who experienced cognitive function difficulties as the result of their chemotherapy treatment. Her active involvement as a juror/examiner and research advisor for Canadian College of Osteopathy allows her to stay current with osteopathic medicine and its treatment effects.
Katrina’s practice includes all individuals who strive for healthy and active life. She has extensive experience treating cognitive functions, patients with injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents, post-concussion syndrome, acute and chronic pain, sport injuries and prevention, postural dysfunctions, migraine headaches, neck, back as well as pelvic pain and dysfunction. Meghan Burek is a Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Ontario. She graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Nutrition from the University of Guelph and went on to comple her dietetic training at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. From a young age, she has always enjoyed sharing her love of food and cooking with others, empowering individuals to be adventurous in the kitchen! As an individual with a food intolerance, she can often be found experimenting to find new and delicious foods and recipes that compliment her special dietary needs. Meghan believes strongly in the value of nutrition promotion and providing the general public with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed and healthy lifestyle choices.
Meghan's experience includes nutrition education through interactive workshops, one-on-one counseling, educational classes, healthy grocery store tours, cooking classes, and more! Wanda is a graduate of the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, Canada’s largest, leading school of holistic nutrition. As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, she enjoys working with her clients individually to assist them in improving health through nutrition. Recognizing that each person is unique, and therefore with individual needs, Wanda specializes in exploring root causes of imbalances and develops personalized food and lifestyle programs based on those needs.
Wanda’s whole foods and supplementation approach can assist with weight loss, food sensitivities, inflammation, digestive troubles, detoxification, hormone rebalancing, and increasing energy, among others.
As a mother, Wanda also understands the difficulties many experience when it comes to feeing their family’s nutritious meals seven days a week. Outside of work, Sarah has a passion for the outdoors and trying new activities. She is an avid mountain bike enthusiast and completed her first 24 mountain bike event this past summer in the Yukon. Sarah also completed her first sprint distance triathlon this summer with plans to one day do a full Olympic distance. Along with these more vigorous activities Sarah equally enjoys a walk by the lake, or a hike in the woods, and chasing after her nieces and nephews. Whatever the goal, Sarah strives to help people participate in happy active lifestyles.
Heather Cracower, MScPT, BEdPE
Registered Physiotherapist, Certified Yoga Instructor, Certified in Acupuncture
Heather initially earned her Bachelor of Education in Physical Education at McGill. Her love of teaching, physical activity, and science then led her to the University of Toronto, where she completed her Master of Science in Physical Therapy. Heather practiced in her field for a year in Toronto before moving to the US, where she spent seven years treating patients, honing her skills and exploring the beauty of the outdoors in the various States she called home.
Heather has always specialized in orthopedics with an interest in the spine and pelvis. Her philosophy of care incorporates a holistic approach that encompasses injury prevention, recovery and rehabilitation, as well as overall wellness. Heather is also a certified yoga teacher, medical acupuncture provider and Thai massage practitioner. When appropriate, she weaves elements of these practices into her care.
Heather is committed to continuing education and over the years has deepened her knowledge base by taking a diverse range of courses that include McKenzie, Mulligan, ART, Diane Lee and the Institute of Physical Art. Heather moved back to Toronto, her hometown, last year, and has been happily rediscovering this great city.
